Principal’s Message

Welc256CB713-6BF1-4040-9E42-3062BBD6F99Fome to the 2017-18 School Year! This is going to be the best year ever!

Highland Springs Elementary has undergone some wonderful changes this summer that will enhance the schooling experience for all students. We have a new name. We are An Achievable Dream Certified Academy at Highland Springs Elementary. Our students are the Scottie Dreamers. As you enter the school you will see freshly painted walls and bright signs that display our new name and character traits we aim to cultivate in our Dreamers.

Our students in kindergarten through second grade will wear their Achievable Dream uniform daily. In a display of unity and school pride, we are asking our 3rd -5th grade students to wear school uniform clothing as well. Why school uniforms? “Uniforms help set the tone for a school environment. Uniforms eliminate the distracting and distressing wrangle over what is and isn’t appropriate. They serve the symbolic function of reaffirming, every time a child looks around or in the mirror, that s/he is a member of a group dedicated to educational success.” (From the book: Standing in the Gap)

AADCA at HSES will continue with the following programs to support an environment for our Dreamers that is conducive to high levels of learning:

  • Our school-wide discipline program will continue. A brochure will come home that explains the program. Students can work hard to earn Scottie Rewards.
  • The Family Honor Roll – earn points through supporting our school programs.
  • Reading success will come from what we do here at school instructionally and what you do at home.  Read, Read, Read.  Students completing their nightly reading expectation will receive recognition for their hard work. Please sign their agenda book nightly.
  • Your child will receive a take-home Tuesday folder that will come home on a weekly basis and will contain a weekly progress report, student work and important communications from the school.

We will have a new family pick up procedure this year that will allow you to stay in your car to pick up your child while also ensuring your child’s safety. Information will be available at our Open House on Thursday, August 31, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

There is a lot of excitement ahead of us, including new teachers to meet, new books to read, new friends to meet and new skills to master…and I look forward to sharing these exciting times with you. As a parent myself, I know how fast time goes by. One year your child’s in 1st grade and seemingly in the blink of an eye they’re in middle school, or in their senior year of high school. Let’s make the most of all our time.

In closing, I invite you to fully embrace these moments and urge you to become familiar with and involved in our total school program. It is the consistent things you do such as asking your child what s/he did at school, reading nightly, as well as creating a homework-friendly home environment that will allow your child to excel.  With your support and cooperation, I have great expectations for what our students can accomplish this year. We are ready to DREAM BIG!!
