School Safety Information

At Highland Springs Elementary School, safety is our number one priority. We are keenly focused on ensuring that all students feel safe when they are at schools. It is our goal to provide academic excellence in a warm, supportive, and safe school climate. To this end, we educate our students about what to do in the event of an emergency situation and conduct routine drills to practice what has been taught.

We take a proactive approach to creating and maintaining a safe environment in our school through our Effective Schoolwide Discipline Program (ESD) known as BARK.  Through this program students are taught our Code of Ethics, role play scenarios using Prosocial Skills during Morning Meetings and through guidance lessons. Each morning, students are reminded to let an adult know if they are having difficulty with any of their peers. They are discouraged from taking matters into their own hands. Students know they can share their concerns with any of the administrators through leaving a not in the counselors mailbox or directly in the box of any administrator. There is also a link on our website where bullying incidents can be reported anonymously.

It takes everyone in our school community to ensure our school is as safe as it can be for our students and staff. You can take an active role by:

  • Calling us if you have any safety related questions or concerns.

  • Being thoroughly familiar with the Highland Springs Elementary Student and Family Handbook located in your students agenda book and on our website.

  • Letting the school know immediately if your emergency contact information changes (i.e. new phone number, change of address, etc.).

  • Calling school before 8:30 a.m. if your child is going to be absent.

  • Using caution in the parking lot and never parking in the front bus loop.

  • Bringing your identification when picking up students or signing in to volunteer.

Being well informed about HCPS Code of Student Conduct and HCPS School Safety Policies and Practices. Visit the school safety website at http://henrico.k12.va.us/SafetySecurity/index.html.
